Moving target tracking is an important technique that has far-flung applications inmany fields, such as military affairs, national defence, industry control, medicinalresearch and navigation. The algorithms on target tracking have been widely studiedand accumulated a lot till now, but there are still some difficulties in how to realizethem for their complicated operations. Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) providestrong hardware groundwork for dynamic image process for their high processing rate,precision and anti-jamming performance.The paper is to introduce a low-cost system to detect and track a moving targetin dynamic backgrounds based on DSP and CPLD. And the system's design processand its experiment result are also given. For two successive frames within the samebackgrounds have great correlativity, the Phase-Correlation algorithm is chosen as theprinciple algorithm to realize the registration of backgrounds'excursion. Thealgorithm is based on the Fourier Transform, which has its special advantages in itsmature FFT and hardware realization. Before and after the Phase-Correlationalgorithm, a set of processing such as auto-selection of processing window,normalization operation and double difference are performed to improveanti-jamming performance. The system is composed of the following parts: the videodecoder module, the format conversion module, the DSP module, the serial portmodule, the memory module and the power module. The floating-pointTMS320VC33 DSP is the main part, which realizes the target-tracking algorithm andcontrols other modules. Philips's decoder SAA7111A and ALTERA's CPLDMAX3064A realize the video decoding and the format conversion. The experimentresults show that we can get the excursion of the target at a precision of one pixel, andthe processing time of one frame is less than 100ms and can meet the item's 120msper frame request.
