The trend of the communication in the future is All-optical communication. The key technology of the light communication is DWDM technology and the key device in DWDM system is the MUX/DMUX. The performance of the MUX/DMUX is very important to influence the communication quality of the WDM system. The necessary demands to the MUX/DMUX are:low crosstalk between channels,stable,low intert-loss,easy to integration and the MUX/DMUX must can be produced in large numbers and cost little money. So the array waveguide grating is appear in this background. The function of the array waveguide grating is similar to the traditional grating, so it can achieve the mutiplux function in wavelength.The main contents of the article are as follows: (1) Introduce the fundmental principle,structure,parameter design,optimize design and produce technology of the array waveguide grating. (2) Introduce the idea of the FD-BPM and deduce a new arithmetic based on it, by comparing the new arithmetic with the old arithmetic, it proved that the accuracy of the new arithmetic is improved without affecting time performance. (3) Introduce the simulation software based on the FD-BPM. Analyze and calculate the transmission mode in the AWG in detail. Calculate the optical power distributing and the spectrum response in 1×4 and 1×8AWGs. (4) A 1×32 DMUX module based on AWG is introduced ,giving the process and the result of the test.
