The quantitative analyze of metallography is about how to determinately expressthe organization of metallography by measurable and calculable parameters, and find therelationship and ruler between material performance and these parameters. Theconventional quantitative analyze of metallography based on labor detection is very hardwork. Some test can not proceed, because of the great amount of work.On the basis of digital image processing and pattern recognizing techniques, aquantitative auto-measurement system was developed to diagnose the graphitizationdegree of carbon steel microstructure for pressure vessel and main steam pipeline afterlong-time running under middle temperature and middle pressure. It can pretreat thepictures to make the picture with narrow gray-level range of the original graphitestructure clear and the graphite overhanging, pick the coarse and black graphite structureby using the edge-measuring method. At last, it use nearest neighbor analysis for judgingthe level of graphitization in carbon steel. The experiments show the algorithm isfeasible.
