Under the impelling of Broadband Network, Telecom Network, ComputerNetwork and Broadcast Network have been converging. And new generationhigh-performance information network is just the convergence of these three networks.With the development of the new network, network performance is improved andnetwork services are more and more abundant in form. The multimedia services willbecome the mainstream.According to this, DSP Research Center Chinese Academy of Sciences carries onthe National 863 Project "High Performance Broadband Information Network". Thepaper introduces the research work and design of Broadband Media Gateway (BMG),which is the main part of the 863 Project. BMG is the home terminal of BroadbandInformation Network. It connects the home local network to the external. BMG ispowerful to offer many functions for 3Tbps network, such as Internet TV, VOD, VoIP.It will be the home network center and media center.During the two years of developing, I was mainly responsible for the R&D ofInternet TV, a stream media service, in BMG.After introducing the background of BMG development, the paper focuses on thewhole process of Internet TV R&D in BMG. The main content is divided into fourparts. Firstly, the design and implementation of Controlled Multicast Protocol (CMP)of IPv4 and IPv6 are introduced. CMP enables the router to authenticate and tomanage group members, and satisfies the requirement of Internet TV usermanagement and business operation. Secondly, the implementation of Multicast toUnicast module (M2U) on IP layer is presented. Thirdly, the R&D of MPEG-2 TSmedia player is introduced in detail. The work includes the implementing of TransportStream software demultiplexer, the optimizing of receiving and processing networkdata in embedded system, the design of sub modules, interfaces and private protocolof Internet TV, and so on. Last, the implementing of performance and malfunctionmanagement in BMG is presented, which includes the design of SNMP TRAP moduleand private MIB.The great development of global network aggravated the serious lack of IPv4addresses. The convergence of voice, data and video requires the network becomingmore powerful and more secure and more mobile. Though IPv6, the core of NGN, hasbeen supported in many operation systems and network equipments such as routersand switches. And the lack of new application restricts the speed of IPv6 development.So BMG will support IPv6 to impel the IPv6 development of our national. Thetechnologies of supporting IPv6 on lower layer and the extension of RTP areintroduced. Finally, the work is summarized and some supposes are presented.
