Mobile reading and playing of digital contents are very important value-added applications for the 3G mobile networks. To make digital contents creation, distribution and consumption controllable and prevent them from unauthorized copying and transmission, the global standardization organizations and manufacturers do a large amount of research in digital rights management (DRM) technology. Among all current DRM technology standard, OMA DRM standards developed by Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) is the most mature with the maximum participants and the greatest influence.OMA only defines the DRM system architecture and the function of right issuer, content issuer and other components, but not involve how the DRM system can be combined with the existing network elements in the 3G mobile networks as a whole to provide users with digital copyright protection. A 3G mobile DRM system that intergrates the DRM system and the 3G networks needs to be developed.First, this paper studies the standards of OMA DRM and proposes a suite of DRM solutions based on the 3G mobile networks, including the design of the interface of DRM system and CP/SP, ISMP and Portal. These solutions effectively intergrate the DRM system and the network elements in the 3G mobile networks and provide the digital right protection to the digital contents. The solutions are compliant with OMA DRM standards, with good compatibility and scalability. Finally, the paper verifies the DRM solutions based on the 3G mobile networks and tests functionality of the system, in order to prove its feasibility. In conclusion, we summarize our work and discuss the next step for future research.
