With the development of the fields of machine vision, the real-time image processing is demanded. Image processing based on software can not meet the real-time, and the development cycle that specific integrated chip is too long and the method is very difficult. With the rapid development on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), it has changed the situation and made real-time image processing with hardware. Today, image processing based on FPGA has become a hot area all over the world.In the paper, the system image acquisition and processing based on FPGA is realized with VHDL (very high speed hardware descript language) on FPGA platform. This system contains image acquisition module, image processing module, test module, display module. The image acquisition module is used to gather image based on CCD camera with Camera Link interface; Image processing module is used to realize some algorithms, it contains histogram statistics, convolution filter and median filter. Image convolution has been depth studied and optimized to adapt to the architecture of FPGA; Test module is used to compare the data between UART interface to PC and the frame grabber; Display module is mainly used to display real-time processing result.The whole design is completed used ISE9.2 and Modelsim on the platform of Xilinx Spartan-3 XC3S200. It has been combinated ISE 9.2 simulation tools with Modelsim in the process of simulation. Finally image acquisition and processing system platform is built. The platform can finish perfectly real-time image acquisition and processing.
