Aided designing of carving patterns is one of most important steps in the process of digital carving production. At present, the primary method is using CAD software to produce complex patterns, which demanding designers with strong graphics editing capabilities. The creation and revision process is tedious and low efficiency. How can make the designs of complex carving patterns more intelligent and convenient is a bottleneck for the digital carving production. When fractal theory is applied to computer graphic design, it can generate beautiful and decorative fractal graphs. Through the study of fractal theory, as compared with various methods which can generated graphics among fractal theory, and target as application of digital artistic wood caring, we had chesen suitable fractal method to gengerate and simulate wood caving patterns which classical or modernistic. In this paper, we improved three fractal graph generating methods:L-system method, IFS method and recursion method. L-system method is effective in controlling topological structures of objects. We improved this method by replacing single line with rich graphic elements, e.g. free-form curve, multi-line and geometry graphs, as the basic composition elements. The resulting patterns are more variable and flexible without being rigid. IFS method is particular useful in creating rich textures used to express details among patterns. We combined IFS method and L-system method to generate graphs suitable for wood carving. Recursion method is used to reflect self-similarity within fractal graphs. We used L-system method to track and control program flows in recursion method, therefore, automated or semi-automated the generation of wood carving graphs. In this paper, we implemented these fractal methods using high-level programming language to design many decorative patterns and to simulate some classical wood carving patterns or hand-made complex templates. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the improved methods which can be used efficiently and accurately, by changing controlling parameters, to produce stylistic wood carving patterns.Application of fractal theory is a brand new idea to wood carving design and is a useful supplement to existing digital design method. Used in wood carving design here, fractal methods are also applicable in designing furniture, construction materials, stone and metal decorative products.
