The 21th century is the age of information explosion. Especially the video and audio information grows mass of amount, which brings the inconvenience both to storage and transition, so the data compression is necessary. The standards of video compression made by different international organization develop from JPEG, JPEG2000, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 and H.261, H.262 (cooperating with MPEG), H.263/H.263+ made by ITU-T to nowadays. Finally the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and the Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) developed H.264/AVC (alias the tenth part of MPEG-4). This is the high performance compression standard.Commonly H.264 saves 1/2 rate bit compared to MEPG-4, but with the cost of complicate calculation. Generally it's ten times more complex than MPEG-4. So it's the standard only suitable for high-end equipment but not cell phone nor camera.Fast intra-prediction mode selection is an important technology which can improve the encoding capability for H.264/AVC. It is possible to adopt the Rate-Distortion Optimized (RDO) mode in H.264 to maximize the coding effect at thecost of a very high computational complexity. To solve the problem, fast intra-prediction algorithm for H.264/AVC is discussed in this paper. The algorithm keeps the quality of image and bit rate, and reduce the coding time. The algorithm will improve the coding efficiency and cut down the requirement for hardware.
