This paper takes visual reporting in new media as the topic and paying special attention to its communicative features and values. The analysis is conducted against the entire information transmission background with the aim to reveal its particularity which distinguishes it from traditional new reporting and the change and new experience it brings to us with respect to information processing, programming, presentation style and transmission patterns and. Comparison is made between traditional news image like TV news report and new photographing reports so as to conclude and foreground the communicative advantage and impact of visual reporting. Meanwhile, based on a discussion on its application and prospect, the communicative values of visual reporting is proposed and illustrated.The first part of the paper is an overview of new media visual reporting which refers to a news reporting pattern centering on visual communication on the basis of digitals, computer network and wireless communication technology, employing non-linguistic signs like pictures and images and channels like the internet, wireless communication net and satellites with the aim to supply receivers with interactive integrated information. This reporting style is based on the communicative rules and features of new media with an emphasis on the force and dominance of visual ability which is different from traditional news reporting. When vision takes the central stage, other types of information and related imagery are integrated so as to achieve good communicative effect. Visual reporting has diversified reporting style, currently including video news, slide show, and flash news and so on. As for the reason for its emergence, explanations are made from four aspect, namely perception about reporting, media technologies, the mass ascetic tastes, and social needs.In the second part, analysis is made about its communicative features. It is found that the communicative features of new media news reporting include the non-lineal and multi-media tendency of programming, the sensibility and immediacy of imagery information, digitalization of information processing and the openness of its formation as well as the interactive property in the process of communication. Non-lineal presentation of its production means the contents of new media new reporting may be inter-related and connected so that the depth and connectivity of information is strengthened; multimedia tendency refers to producing visual information by combining static and dynamic images as well as by highly integrating words, sounds and other informative forms so as to greatly enhance the communication of information. The sensitivity and directness of image information bestow upon new media visual reporting a strong perceptual color and appeal. Vivid image and rich details can always arouse the enthusiasm and eagerness in people of spreading the information and expressing their stories. On the other hand, the digitalization of information processing has unified the code form of news reporting. As a result, visual reports can spread to a further distance with more information and the copy and saving of image information become easier and more accurate. The openness of its formation embodies in aspects like the transmitters, the communicated content and the communicative forms, which breaks the closeness and monopoly of news image in the press. The receivers have more initiative in the whole communicative process including making and receiving. Communication is featured with strong interaction and the role of transmitter and receivers are not fixed any more: the exchange of roles may happen in a second. Receivers'ability to choose and control the content of reports is greatly enhanced.The third part discusses the communicative value. Based on these features and advantages, new media visual reporting provides new thinking and applications for the transition of traditional media and accelerates the integration of different types of medium. At the same time, the production pattern of new media reporting is changed and news reporting becomes diversified and heterogeneous. More importantly, people get an opportunity to express themselves freely with images and personalization of news communication enhances the popularity and participatory feature of communication.In the end, looking into the future of new media news reporting, it is gradually shaking off the shackles posed by traditional media in terms of content and perception and a great leap-forward is achieved in new reporting. As for traditional media, recognition of differences does not mean there is no hope in the future. Instead, it can improve its influence and realize further development by sharing complementary advantages so as to invent original means for news processing and information presentation.
