Railway is one of the most important transports for our country and has great impacts on the development of national economies. The dynamic parameters of steel rail wear directly affect the safety of the system and the upper limit values have been regulated for the daily maintenances of the steel rails in our railway department. The steel rails should be replaced in time when the wear exceeds those values; otherwise, the unexpected dangers may be occurred. The steel rail wear becomes more and more serious with the high-speed, high-heavy and high-density running of railway transport. Therefore, it is significant to carry out the research for detection of the steel rail wear.To overcome the disadvantages of manual static detection that can not meet the requirement of high-speed vehicle development, we present a vehicle-carried detection system to measure the steel rail wear parameters. It includes an infrared linear lighting source, an optical receiving system with CCD sensor and an image process system. The wear parameters can be derived from the post process system and the corresponding position can be determined under the help of global positioning system (GPS). This system has a higher process speed and provides more accurate measurement results.In this thesis, it presents the introduction of the project background and the research significance, and also the overview of domestic and foreign research. Then the requirement analysis for the detection system of the steel rail wear is given in the following parts:according to the detection function requirements, the whole system structure is outlined and the corresponding system is designed; a measurement mode for the steel rail wear is built and the software calculation flow diagram is shown. The VC++6.0 is used as the development platform to finish each module functions. It emphasizes the image process function which is the main part that the author participated in this project, including the process of design, development, and realization. Based on the detailed analysis and experiments, the process flow diagram of the software for the wear parameters is presented. The practical application circumstances and system running efficiency requirements have been taken into account during the realization of noise removal, grey grade enhancement, edge extraction, image refinement, distorted image correction and wear parameter calculations. Different algorithm characters in software process have been compared and analyzed. In combination with the new positioning basic mode for the steel rail maintenance, the reasonable and suitable algorithm software has been adopted. The wear parameters can be derived with high accuracy according to the analysis and calculation of steel rail wear in horizontal and vertical planes. The results meet the project requirement.The whole system has a very simple and easy-operation interface, which realizes the functions including image process, data calculation, etc. The user can easily carry out post process of the detected data, such as analyzing, dealing with and printing out, etc.A part of functions of the system have been applied in practice. It runs quite well, and the final results indicate that it has reached the designed requirements.
