On behalf of the level of the painting in Ming Dynasty, “the Four WU families” not only lead the trend of painting and calligraphy art in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, but also has a certain influence on the painting and calligraphy market.Most studies of “the Four WU families”focus on their art and their history. In fact, the success of “the Four WU families” not only relies on their artistics, but also relies on their ability to operate the market. That the market’s demand for their paintings and calligraphy works means that the elegant culture is accepted by the public.This thesis argues that the seller of “the Four WU families” has its unique production and sales strategy, and the buyer of “the Four WU families” has a different purchase and collection purposes and ways. The problems arising from the both sides have an impact on the calligraphy and painting market in late Ming Dynasty. Research contents of this thesis:1) From the social economic and cultural conditions, the study analyzes the reason why “the Four WU families”is so popular, why they are accepted by the painting and calligraphy market.2) The study researches how “the Four WU families” create their own market and their calligraphy and painting works. If the works of calligraphy and painting can be seen as a kind of commodity, including production, promotion and sales strategies, consumers in the purchase of works of calligraphy and painting, also want to consider their own consumption purposes, and because of the particularity of calligraphy and painting, the purchase is relatively complex.3)The study researches the influence of “the Four WU families”on the calligraphy and painting market in the late Ming, discussing some problems in the painting market.
