The structual design is a procedure of analysis, check and result expression, so the structural CAD system was developed to match the needs of structual design modernization.The founction of structural CAD system are composed of two parts, the structual design and supplementary function including man-machine conversation to prepare the analysis data, make the data files and control the task, edit and save picture data, exchange and manage the data. Structural analysis and design will become precise, convenience and effective with above supplymentary functions, especially data management function.Usually data is exchanged between different programs, and the type of data is various. It includs interger, float, character, string, or vector, matrix, geometric picture data, etc. . Furthermore, the data is airways dynamical and should be easily edited. The simple file system and tradional database system can not satisfy these requests. So it is urgent to expand the existing Relational Database or develop a special Engineering Database.The generation, development and structure of database system, the Nomal Forms of Realation Schema and the design steps of database are introduced in this paper. It expatiates on the characteristics of data management in structural CAD system and how to use MFC ODBC to develop a RDBMS.Using MFC ODBC technology, a data management system FEDBS for structural analysis based on Microsoft Access is developed in this paper. The visual data I/O, checking data validity, directing data to database, browsing and editing data were realized in the program. It enhanced the efficiency of data management in CAD system.Developing a RDBMS or CAD software is not the task in thisresearch. The author made effort to discuss how to develop a RDBS for structural CAD system with MFC ODBC.
