Nowadays, the scientific computing scale becomes larger and larger, more and more multimedia applications are introduced, and the domain of transaction processing and scientific research goes deeper and deeper. All these lead to the urgent demand for higher performance microprocessor. The Nation attaches more and more importance to the developing of the high performance microprocessor. This project derives from the high-performance CPU chip design of the national significant "863" projects and its object is design a 64-bit high performance general purpose microprocessor. We analyzed the architecture of Itanium Processor Family which based on IA-64 architecture, studied the micro-architecture of the X Processor which was designed by ourselves. Furthermore we studied the integer instruction set of IA-64 in detail and completed the design of the integer unit of the X Processor. Finally, we optimized and verified the designed integer unit. The main contributions are as follows:1. The architecture of IA-64 based Itanium Processor Family is analyzed and the EPIC design style is studied.2. The micro-architecture of the X Processor which was designed by us and the integer instruction set of IA-64 are analyzed.3. We designed the integer unit of X processor, which including multimedia unit, the 64-bits dynamic parallel adder, 64-bits carry look-ahead adder, the parallel multiplier, the shifter etc.4. We optimized and verified the designed integer unit. We put forward three optimization methods, which including split the pipeline stage, resource duplicate on micro-operation level, produce the critical signal in advance. We also set up an applied simulation verification flow. The results proved that our optimization and verification are effective.X processor has been emulated on the Palladium hardware platform and been synthesized by Artisan's 0.13 um process library. The integer unit's critical path delay is 1.96ns, which can meet the whole system's needs.
