With the rapid development of networks, the proportion of IP packet transmission becomes more and more, so IP packet transmission will be the main operation in the future. In addition, the optical networks have wide application perspective for the increasing bandwidth users need. Therefore, how to effectively combine IP with optical network and how to control IP/optical network are current research hotspots.This thesis designs a MPLS control mechanism and its function models in detail, and applies the MPLS control mechanism to IP/WDM MAN (Metropolitan Area Network).Firstly, this thesis analyzes and compares the advantages and disadvantages of several popular network structures, and thinks that IP/WDM network structure has good future. In addition, this thesis introduces MPLS technology in IP/WDM network and compares the several signaling technology in MPLS.Secondly, this thesis analyzes and compares options in MPLS, and chooses some options being suitable for controlling IP/WDM network. This thesis focuses on MPLS control mechanism in IP/WDM network. The auther designs a MPLS network controller, which includes four modules, that is, the core module, the connection module, the resource management module and the fault/recovery module.In the core module, the auther adds control status parameters TLV in Hello message to store status information of controller, and analyzes the process of exchanging controller information and initialization by extending Hello message. In the connection module, the auther analyzes the unicast and multicast in MPLS respectively, and proposes a new MPLS multicast mechanism, that is, aggregated common section of multicast tree based on topology drived. In the resource management module, this thesis extends Hello message, and analyzes congestion control by new congestion parameters TLV in Hello message. In the fault/recovery module, the auther proposes a mechanism to inspect and notify fault, and select method of fault recovery dynamically.
