The various applications of Internet not only have come into almost every field of human life, but also have been changing the way of people's life. Understanding the performance of the Internet is remarkably important because of the increasingly significant role the Internet has played in society. The research on network performance measurement is a project that must be developed since it is the base of proper management and efficient control of the Internet and is of great value to construct the next generation Internet. The Internet Protocol has got incredible success. Hundreds and Thousands of computers are connected based on it. But, with the explosively expansion of the Internet and the emergence of many novel applications, IPv4 is no longer competent. In order not to impede the development of the Internet, the research on IP Next Generation was carried out, that is, IPv6. It is because IPv6's very large. address family, its hierarchical address architecture, its faster routing, its strengthened security, its better support for mobility and QoS that it is taken as the best protocol to substitute for IPv4. With the increasing of network products of different types under IPv6, the efficiency of IPv6 services becomes more and more important. So it is of great meaning to deploy network measurement under IPv6.In this paper, the purposes of network measurement, the measurement entities and the measurement methods are studied. Active measurement is elaborated, which is used to monitor the end-to-end user application under IPv6. The efficiency of this method with WWW application and E-mail application are proved. Using active measurement to probe the user applications can compensate for the deficiency of passive measurement and device based management used in traditional network management system, using which it is difficult to monitor the user's end-to-end applications and to guarantee the quality of network applications' performance. Put the above theory into practice, httpPenetrating6 and mailPenetrating6 are developed to monitor the performance of WWW service and E-mail service respectively. Being imbedded into a large-scale network performance measurement system Fox, developed by members of ICT, CAS, the two measurement tools have passed the inspection of experts from national 863 project team and will surely be of great use in national information technology development. Besides, the Security module of Fox is realized. MD5 and RSA algorithm are adopted to assure the privacy, authentication, wholeness and undeniablility of the Fox system. This measurement method could be used not only in WWW and E-mail, but also in a lot of other applications such as FTP, TELNET, Streaming Media, etc. It certainly will have a bright future.
