In the age when the huge wave that named "digital form" sweep over the world, computer network becomes the primary way that people exchange their information. For using the resource of public network as more as possible, and implementing it as internal network, the advent of the VPN satisfies these requirements. And with the proving of network technology, VPN is developed from conventional forms to IP network-oriented forms.Now these are many ways in implementing of VPN, but how to decide which is fitted one's situation is still a problem when we apply this technology. To solve the problem, this paper has finished the follow process:By analyzing several ways in implementing of mainstream VPN, it points out that the key of VPN is the mechanism of tunnel. So according to analysis the various performance of network that caused by various mechanism, we can conclude the differentia in technical implementing of VPN, then we can choose the right VPN fits the real situation of our network and requirement.In the next step, according to analyze how does the VPN work, it poses a method which classifies VPN on the mechanism when tunnel is created. Compared the quondam methods, the modified method can not only solves the problem in quondam methods, but also images the performance caused by tunnel mechanism directly. It is more useful in application.Then, with the theory of testing for network, this paper designs a group of testing methods for the VPN indicators to verify it. The indicators is referred the mature performance indicator system of IP network. For the objectivity of the data in testing, it applies the theory of controlled quality in IT project management to guarantee it.In virtue of the above all, this paper designs a testing scheme which is based on the real situation of a Board Band IP network in ChangSha city, and has finished it with the four various mechanism, they are L2TP, VPLS, MSTP and DDN. By analyzing the data, it draws a conclusion which one is better. The result of testing and analyses indicate that the new classification is correct.The classification works well in the real network. With its help, we can know the right tunnel mechanism to creating VPN for various situation and requirement, and decide what should be chosen. Finally, this paper looks into the future of VPN, and points out to fit the development of VPN, what will be done in the classification.
