With the rapid development of communication technology and business, DWDM technology is considered to be the key method to solve problems in high-capacitance optical fiber communication. Research on optical switch devices is highlight nowadays. Optical switch devices are key components in all-optical network, and play an important role in optical fiber communication. It is used in routing switch wavelength choice optical cross connection natural repair protection and so on.Polymer material is a kind of applicable material. It has the advantages of high thermo-optical ratio and low heat conduction ratio. In this thesis, we design and analyze a novel polymer thermo-optical digital optical switch(DOS) device. The DOS is attractive in practice due to its low crosstalk, low insertion loss and low power consumption, in addition, it shows good polarization independence and good stability.At first, based on the theory of radiation loss of bend waveguide, we present a kind of polymer thermo-optic variable optical attenuator (VOA) with S-bend waveguide. And then we change the output S-bend waveguides of the conventional Y-branching digital optical switch into the above VOA. We connect this VOA with a novel structure-optimized Y branch. The Y-branch device is used to realize the initially optical power assign. And the VOA is used to realize the low crosstalk. At last, we get the 1 × 2 symmetric DOS with low insertion loss and low crosstalk (We have applied a patent for it: "Low crosstalk Digital Optical Switch",application code: 200310108408.2).With an applied electrical power of 140mW, it has a low insertion loss of -1.3dB and a low crosstalk of-39dB at 1.55 μm. The switchs' response duration is 3 ~ 4ms.Based on the 1×2 symmetric DOS, we design a kind of 1 × 2 asymmetric DOS, which is adaptable to fabracate the protection switches in an optical communications system. Based on the two kinds of 1× 2 DOS, we design and realize the integrated optical switches: 1 × 4 DOS and 2 × 2 DOS.The test results show that the devices can achieve our design object, which means that our design is feasible. The optical switch devices are attractive in practice due to their good characteristic.
