By the development and customization of Linux operating system, the embedded Linux operating system for automated ocean observation system that is suitable for China's conditions and possess independent property right has been completed. Based on PC/104 technology, the system is an operating platform for application program of ocean observation system. its characteristics are practical, advanced, high effective, stable and reliable.The paper analyses and studies the Linux kernel structure, source code, and investigates the essential framework and principle of Linux operating system. On the basis of these, it also discusses how to fully customize Linux Kernel and system's environment. According to the combination of the theory with the practice, author demonstrates the realization of embedded operating system based on PC/104 platform. The system provides the support for network and serial interface communication, makes it have the ability to control various ocean sensors. By the development of this project, the embedded Linux operating system platform is provided for automated ocean observation system. In addition, by the analyze and research of the system as well as the addition and deletion of functional module, the expansibility for platform is assured.The project is the Youth Ocean Science Fund Program of State Oceanic Administration. In the field of the automated ocean observation in China, it is the first research effort on the embedded operating system platform. This system has been put into pre-operating phase in a simulating environment. This system will make great contribution to strengthening the performance, stability and security of China's automated ocean observation system, and enhance development efficiency of application software for future observation system.
