With the advent of the information era, the economic value and social value of information resources is more and more obvious. To discover valuable information or knowledge in the databank for decision-making purposes becomes an arduous task.The introduction of data mining, which aims to obtain knowledge immersed in the massive databank, has greatly facilitated the matter. A dynamic field in this endeavor is classification mining. In order to gain the information, an efficient and effective algorithm is required to scan the whole databank. As databanks, the search range, are generally very large in quantity, exhaustion methods are not feasible, and the adoption of an effective search strategy is of capital importance. The recent decade saw many successful applications of a genetic algorithm based search strategy. In this paper, fundamental knowledge and techniques of data mining and genetic algorithm are introduced, the design and application of genetic algorithm in data mining is discussed, an elite recombination based genetic algorithm is proposed. The convergence features and time complexity of the proposed algorithm is analyzed, application of the algorithm realized in SQL language in the data sets of Adult and Nursery School is conducted with satisfactory results.
