With the dramatic development of Internet, we are facing a radical change in the way people find and use information resources. Now more and more scholarship documents have web citations, which indicates that network information has had impacts on the formal scholarly communication system. Oversea scholars have studied something about web citation for nearly ten years, but few scholars in our country take notice of it. In the view of the growing quantity of web citation in scholarship documents, it is time for us to attach importance to this phenomenon. In this thesis, the author view web citation as a kind of new information source, and systematically mining and analyzing the web citation information. Furthermore, some important application was found in digital library.Firstly, this thesis analyzed the concepts and characteristics of web citation, and introduced the current study situation, some potential study directions and methods of web citation research. Then, using the statistical data of web citation in scholarship documents and documents having web citations, with the method of infbrmetrics, statistics and text mining, the author analyzed the web citation information in depth. According to the information, concluded what influence has network resource on scholarly communication. Furthermore, the author took informatics as an example and gathered indexed web citations to analyze the characteristics and laws of web citation. From this, some available information was obtained. And then, some revelation was offered from above analysis. It guides us to optimize the construction of digital library resources, especially the development of virtual collections. And furthermore, this makes it possible for us to offer better services to the digital library users.
