This paper deals mainly with the design and implementation of medical films scanning and processing. There are three important parts in this thesis: medical films image acquisition, DICOM files parsing and construction and DICOM files archiving. In the first part of this paper, the TWAIN standard is described in detail firstly, then an implementation of image acquisition is presented, and a comparison of different data transfer modes is made. In the second part, the DICOM standard that is used for the implementation of PACS is introduced, and a detail description of the main architecture of the DICOM standard and the DICOM file format is made, with a method for parsing and construction of DICOM files is given. In the third part, the DICOM message exchange and upper layer protocol are explained in detail, and the implementation of the communication between DICOM application entities using Windows Sockets is given.The accomplishment of films scan processing system based on the DICOM standard resolves the problem of medical films digitized archiving, using a industrial standard format for storage, having high value for applications. The system is characterized by rational structure, good user interface, easy to operate, and can bring us remarkable social and economic benefits.
