Having gone through the endeavor and exploration for the past century, shipbuilding industry in China has achieved a great development, especially the growth by struggling with China's reform and opening-up of last two decades and the highly-outstanding progress in maritime technology make China one of the largest among shipbuilding giants. Up to now, large number of contemporarily-advanced vessels of different types have been successfully completed in China, among which were multi-purpose offshore support vessels, large reefer container vessels, shuttle tankers, RoRo vessels, oil product carriers and highly-speedy aluminum alloy hovercrafts etc.. The level of automatization, performance and technology of equipment onboard these vessels have been improved to a great extent, and by importing, assimilating and then absorbing technology from abroad, most of equipment have reached the world level do as the developed countries, such as the new type of monitoring devices(STIVC2100 PM & MA) for electric generator and main engine monitoring system(CODAD) for parallel operation on double-engine-double-shaft-driven ships, which are to be put into use onboard.With the arrival of the 21 century, the automatization on ship control and management will get further improvement, and the existing ones will also be continuously perfected to a higher level, e.g. the ship's comprehensive automatization, one bridge system, global maritime distress and safety system(GMDSS), global position system(GPS), automatic identification system(AIS), voyage digital record(VDR) and comprehensive multifunctional communication system etc..In this paper, closely connecting with the actual application of automatization on power station and main engine remote control, and based on the experiences in automatization design together with the successively-built vessels of all kinds in our yard, summarized descriptions will go to the present status, performance and characteristics of automatization in machinery room, analysis and discussion will also be given to classified requirement by rules and regulation on system design of monitoring, alarm, remote control and automatic shift of main and auxiliary equipment, including test and inspection; all of which, by summarizing the design skeleton and the design ideals on ship automatization, have made some guidance with ship automatization design in the future. Furthermore, close attention will be paid on the development of new technology on ship automatization by lookinginto the distance of tendency on the development of ship automatization and keeping up with the Joneses on the development of electric automatization, so that which can be qualified in shipbuilding design requirement in the 21 century. In the end, the paper is to aim at raising the shipbuilding design to a higher level as a contribution to building advanced ship in China.
