Composition plays an important role in the Chinese teaching of middle schools. Teachers and students always pay most attention to it. However, the cruxes of what to write and how to write often bother students deeply, and the inefficiency of composition teaching has been widely recognized. Therefore calls for reformation of composition teaching methods have been heard from time to time. The most important question is about composition materials. It is essential to solve the problem to improve students' composition ability and enhance their Chinese communication levels.As an experienced Chinese teacher in the front line, I have a close contact with composition teaching and know well about students' difficulties in material selection. This paper explores the status of students' composition ability and teachers' instruction ability in Shanghai after careful study of relevant documents, implying empirical research as the main research method, and analyzing objectively composition problems based on investigation as well as theories of psychology, pedagogy and Chinese language learning.Composition and its teaching at middle schools are a huge and complex system. In order to make the paper express my insights about composition problems and be helpful for composition teaching and research, it selects composition materials as the breakthrough point, conducting basic investigation into middle school students' composition practice to learn about the accumulation and application of composition materials and shortcomings of current composition teaching and find out proper solutions.The paper consists of four chapters.Chapter 1 explains the reason to talk about the subject. Composition is an essential life skill in the modern time. Meanwhile it is also an important part of Chinese teaching contents. And the composition material problem is worthy to study since it is a hindrance to boost composition ability and a basic subject for composition guidanceAs the center of the paper and the basis of the research, Chapter 2 focuses on questionnaire survey and result analysis. It is constituted by two parts. The first is investigation and result analysis of students' selection of composition materials, and the second is investigation and result analysis of teachers' instruction. I learn about the basic conditions of students' application of composition materials and teachers' guidance through statistics of investigation data and relevant interviews. There are many problems, such as out-of-date composition ideas, prevalently vague and politicized instruction, inefficient collection, compilation and accumulation of materials, disjoint of reading and writing, and trivial influence of lessons, textbooks and teachers on students' composition practice and material selection.Chapter 3 studies the reasons causing these problems. Major reasons include backward composition ideologies, utilitarian environment, vague instruction and absent-minded material accumulation.Chapter 4 puts forward with strategies to solve these problems according to investigation results and analysis combined with pedagogy, psychology, Chinese teaching theories and composition practice. The strategies include establishment of new ideology of life-based composition, enhancement of composition efficiency through reading and writing combination and efficient accumulation of materials. Based on investigation and relevant theories, the paper gives insight into composition problems and lays foundation to further study composition teaching at middle schools.
