Research Of General Education In The University Of Chicago

Strengthened along with the tendency in differentiation and integration of the knowledge, the general education has been accepted and improved by more and more universities in the world. The general education starts in US. In its developing process, the University of Chicago has played the important role. In this papers, the author research the development of general education in the University of Chicago in the history, as well as the present specific pattern, clarifies the meaning of the general education. At the same time, according to the successful case of general education in the University of Chicago, the author proposes some suggestions on the advancement of general education in China research universities.There are four parts in the main body of this paper. The first part discusses the concept of the general education on the limits and the discrimination. The second part elaborates in detail the history of the general education development in the University of Chicago. The third part analyzes the general curriculum at present, As well as development course and present characteristic which educates according to University of Chicago, forecast US general educates trend of development. The last part, through comparison with the universities of other countries especially America, concludes that it is necessary and inevitable for China research universities to practice general education in the future. Finally, the author proposes some suggestions on general ideal, general curriculum, the wisdom of the headmaster and the strength of the teachers..In US's higher history of education, University of Chicago is a young university. However, it can advance into the world first-class university actually in the short time. As one therefore raises the graduate student primarily research university, University of Chicago's undergraduate student educates stands out similarly in American Higher Educational circles, all these have the important model significance to our University which the general education has just started.
