The existing National Matriculation English Test(NMET),after undergoing a series of successful reforms, has made great progress in the past three decades. Regarded as the only actually-working evaluation criterion of the Senior English Teaching, NMET plays a dominant role in promoting the development of Senior English Teaching and Learning, arousing great enthusiasm on the part of both teachers and students for the English language. But on the other hand , owing to its own defects , NMET has also brought about some negative effects , and the problems seem to be getting more and more serious with competitions becoming increasingly fierce .As the National English Curriculum Standard is being carried out , it is getting all the more important and urgent to solve these tough problems. This thesis is an attempt to explore a way to improve NMET, with a view to creating a harmonious relationship between Senior English Teaching and NMET.The thesis breaks down into four major parts:The first part gives a comprehensive description of some basic theories about English testing, and has an adequate discussion on some basic theories about English teaching and learning.In the second part, a review is presented of the history of NMET, and an analysis is given of the 2005 NMET Paper (containing listening ).In the third part, an analysis, based on the English testing and teaching theories, is made of the result of a questionnaire on the present situation of senior English teaching in Luan city ,Anhui province and some harmful effects which NMET has brought upon Senior English Teaching and Learning are pointed out.In the fourth part, some ideas and suggestions are offered for the improvement of NMET so that it will help promote the development of the Senior English Teaching and Learning.The conclusion part emphasizes that the present situation of the Senior English Teaching and Learning calls for further improvement of NMET and points out that to create a harmonious relationship between Senior English Teaching and NMET, other reforms, such as the evaluation system reform, are also necessary.
