It is the nation-states'basic expectation and one of the most fundamental educational goals to make every person a good citizen by instruction. Under such background, theories of citizenship and citizenship education have been developed gradually. Since 1980s,especially 1990s, however, the existing definition of citizen, and theories of citizenship and citizenship education have been challenged with the increasing of globalization and the development of the theory of globalization. In such a context, the concept and theory of global citizens have come into being and the thought of education for global citizenship has been put into practice in some respects. With China's entry into WTO and the widening and deepening of its intercourse with other countries, how to face the challenges and made proper responses to them has become a major task for us in our citizenship education. It is of significantly importance to research on the thought of education for global citizenship undoubtedly.Based on the literature review, the thesis tries to expound the thought of global citizenship education, by ascending to the its origin and development, exploring the characteristics of the conceptions of global citizenship and education for global citizenship, and examining its influences.The paper is comprised of a preface and four parts. Part 1 mainly examines the origin and development of the thought of global citizenship education. The characteristics of the thought in different stages are analyzed according to the three-stage division of the history: pre-modern times, modern times and post-modern times.Part 2 explores into the characteristics of the conception of global citizenship after analyzing the features of modern citizenship , examining the challenges of globalization for the modern citizenship.Part 3 mainly examines and analyzes the conception of education for global citizenship.Part 4 provides a brief evaluation of the thought of education for citizenship on the basis of summarizing the characteristics of the thought of education for global citizenship, and examining the effect of the thought upon the educational theory and practice.
