Henry·Philip· Tappan(1805-1881)is famous American higher educational reformerduring the Mid-19th century. He once studied abroad Europe and was deeply influenced byGerman universities' patterns. His Ideas on Research and Encyclopaedia University was thenformed. When he returned to homeland, he devoted himself to the cause of American highereducation reforms. Tappan accepted the invitation of the University of Michigan as the firstpresident in 1885. He put his Educational Purposes Outlook, Teachers Outlook andAutonomy Outlook into the university's reforms of courses, college buildings, facilities,teachers and administrations. The Reformed university of Michigan quickly became themodel of Western State University and provided valuable experiences and reference valuesfor American Research University.
