This thesis probes into the evolvement of the American federal government's educational policy for the American Indians chronologically. With the change of the Indian problems and the education state of the whole nation, the federal educational policy for the Indians embraces different characteristics at different stage. Before 1960s,the policy of assimilation counts much although some new opportunities to the Indians have emerged from the New Deal circa in 1930-40s. After 1960s, influenced by many factors such as Civil Rights Movement and the advancement of multi-cultural idea, the trend of the federal educational policy for the Indians is to encourage self-determination in education, which reflects the respect to traditional culture of the Indians.
