An Investigation On Reading Strategies Of Senior High School Students In Ily National Minority Area

In Chinese EFL teaching, reading is universally and officially acknowledged to be a prior language skill. However, the results of the teaching of reading are not so satisfactory, especially in Ily National Minority Area (INMA). Since Goodman's psycholinguistic model was posed (1967; 1971), reading has been viewed as an interactive process and a cognitive skill rather than a passive and static process. As a result, the focus of reading research has been shifted from the outcome of reading to a description and investigation of the reading process, which gives rise to the issue of reading strategies. Based on a questionnaire investigation on senior students' English reading in INMA and the theoretical study, this paper has made a brief study on reading strategies of the students in the area, illustrating the necessity of reading strategies so that the concrete approaches can be determined.In Section One, the feasibility and necessity of studying the use of reading strategies are discussed.In Section Two, the theoretical study is made. Reading and reading strategies employ the results in efficient reading comprehension.In Section Three, with considering the questionnaire investigation results and the theoretical study, a strategy-based instruction and training plan has been made. Statistic results showed the plan is practical and valuable. These results also support the idea that reading strategies aid in improving reading proficiency and reducing discrepancy in INMA.Section Four is the conclusion. It is found out that majority of senior students fail to use reading strategies in reading activities thanks to lack of the reading ability. The results of experiment made by the author support the idea. Results also show that strategy-based instruction and training are practical and valid.
