Chinese reading teaching is an important part of Chinese subject, and the importance of reading teaching is self-evident. Some existent problems in the Chinese reading teaching are put forward according to the actualities of the Chinese reading teaching in middle school. One of the problems is the lack of the effective guidance of micro-theory. Especially the lack of the effective guidance of micro-theory in reading teaching results in the fact that the Chinese teachers teach reading without much knowledge in macro-theory of the new curriculum reforms, but with limited experience. Obviously it is inefficient in reading teaching. Relevance theory can provide micro-theoretical guidance for the middle school reading teaching in understanding the nature of reading, the cognitive context and reasoning in the reading process. And there is hope for Chinese language teachers to get rid of the dependence on experience and tradition, so that the reading teaching becomes more in line with the requests of the new curriculum.This thesis is made up of four parts as follows:Part OneIn this part, the actuality of reading teaching is investigated mainly by questionnaire to learn the cognition of Chinese language teachers and students in the reading teaching process and results. There are two parts in the questionnaires, separately for the teachers and the students to learn their cognition and attitude in reading teaching.Part TwoThe basic viewpoints are introduced in this part. In order to help to understand the relevance theory, its historical backgrounds and theoretical bases are firstly introduced. And the key points which can guide Chinese reading teaching are mainly presented, namely the cognitive context of the relevance theory, the principles of the relevance theory and the reasoning of the relevance theory.Part ThreeThe domestic and foreign researches on the application of the relevance theory are introduced in this part. The domestic and foreign researches of the relevance theory are firstly summarized. And on the base of it, the help for the Chinese reading teaching are inspired.Part FourIn this part, it is about the application of the relevance theory in the Chinese reading teaching. Under the guidance of the relevance theory, the traits and the practice patterns of the Chinese reading teaching are elaborated; applying the cognitive context, the principles and the reasoning of the relevance theory, a practical and maneuverable Chinese reading teaching case is put forward to present the traits of the reading teaching under the guidance of the relevance theory. And finally some strategies about applying the relevance theory are suggested.
