Traditional settlements are historic witness of China's being a big agricultural country in the past thousands of years. They are of great value in history and culture through the whole scene, and show typical characteristics of certain historical periods. In addition, the traditional settlements are also carrier of residents' social and cultural life, and are urgently required to be revamped and developed.Along with the vigorous development of China's economy and culture, urbanization changes the scene of towns and villages rapidly. Traditional settlements are facing tremendous challenge. Under the current social and economic developing stage, it is very difficult for most of the areas to appropriate enough fund for the protection of such historic and cultural environment. Therefore, tourism development can be a feasible method. Through tourism, the traditional buildings and environment can be protected, the living conditions of local residents can be improved, and furthermore, the economic development of the areas can be effectively promoted. When the economy develops in a benign circle, the traditional settlements can exist and develop permanently and healthily. This thesis combines the writer's research with her designing practices in some traditional settlements that began to develop tourism, analyzing the pros and cons of the method of protecting and renewing the traditional settlements through developing tourism; probing into using different methods in different areas, and proposing some concrete plans and design methods. It also analyzes the importance of conceptual design, the significance of the cooperation among various social spheres on the basis of legal system, and some contradictions needed be resolved.
