As the main art form of western painting developed till today, oil painting has experienced transformation from traditional to modern. This article discusses characteristics of artistic language in different stages through exploration of the history and analysis on internal elements; by discussing the cause, result, existence and influence of complanationon contemporary Chinese oil painting, hopefully we could make a little bit of contribution to artists on forming their own artistic language, therefore extend the room of development for oil painting. After research and analysis on large amount of resources both literature and graphical, I realized the artistic language actually has a much broader and profounder mean. Between Traditional painting and modern painting, western painting and Oriental painting, there is not simply a time period development, nor sharing a common art feature. Therefore, the approach of historical research is far from adequate, In order to understand the intrinsic connection, we have to analyze the art form and color language. Furthermore, the masterworks and ideas from top artists can also help us to understand the transformation. The first part of this article mainly focus on analyzing the social factors which drive the transformation of artistic language, including the development of philosophy and scientific technology, the influence of oriental art as well as the characteristics before and after the transformation. The second part describes the exploration of different artistic language took by various schools of western artists, also discloses the intrinsic pattern and presentation of the language transformation. The third part brings out not only the influence of transformation of western artistic language on Chinese oil painting but also the trend of complanation in contemporary Chinese oil painting. Finally the last part discusses the significance and existence of complanation in contemporary Chinese oil painting. To conclude, in modern times, the feature of the complanation not only adapting international trend and national tradition, but also showing the characteristics of certain time period; it is a channel which reflects both real world and ideas of artists. Artists need to focus on the consolidation of presentation and inner feelings, utilize the feature of complanation, and create more art works with both international and traditional characteristics in the future.
