Italian Renaissance generated a new conception of art and artistic practice. Because of sharing a common cultural heritage of ancient Roman Empire, and being close to Italy, Renaissance ideas and art could traversed the border and exerted a significant influence upon French culture and art. The process of acculturation was first ignited by French king and royal army's experience of splendid Italian culture and art during the Italian War period. The hiring of Italian artists by French court and aristocracy later assisted the spread of Italian Renaissance taste in France.This dissertation discusses the influence of French-Italian wars beginning from 1494 on the cultural exchange between France and Italy, and especially Francis I's contribution to the dissemination of Renaissance artistic ideas in France. Part of the dissertation comments on the influence of Italian artistic new idea on the construction and decoration of chateaux in Loire and Paris. The rest part discusses the influence of Italian Renaissance art on the artistic Schools of Provence, Loire and Fontainebleau. This dissertation put forward that France set a good example in learning from Italian culture and art. Not only France absorbed brilliant Italian aesthetic ideas, but also France integrated this foreign ideas and practice with its own art tradition and on this base created grandeur artistic forms.
