This thesis tries to discuss and analyze To the Lighthouse—the masterpiece of famous English female writer Virginia Woolf in light of intertextual theory from feminism and modernism aspects. From the feminism of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Woolf's To the Lighthouse,we can see the feminism's development. To illustrate modernism in To the Lighthouse, three perspectives have been chosen:stream-of-consciousness,symbolism and multi-voice.In modernism part, the intertextual comparison will be used between Ulysses,Lord Jim and To the Lighthouse. After the intertextual comparison,I come to the conclusion that it is not only an avant-garde novel, but also a work of poetic and singnificant novel with female elegance.
