Semantic Rhetorical Analysis Of "～JIU" And "JIU～"

From the perspective of rhetoric, this thesis aims to explore the meanings of the words and phrases concerning JIU(wine) which is a special cultural carrier, mainly by exhaustingly comparing and differentiating the 917 words and phrases concerning JIU compiled in The Dictionary of Chinese and by analyzing the formative course of their meanings and explaining their semantic rhetoric, as well as by digging up their inherent rhetoric thinking during the process of the semantic formation.Meanwhile, this thesis points out the differentiation of and the reasons for the commendatory and derogatory sense of the words and phrases concerning JIU. Besides the reason of being the materialistic funtion of the word JIU itself, the differentiation is also, in deep sense, closely linked with the philosophical thoughts of Confucianism, Taoism and Zen in the society. The Confucian JIU manners requests that JIU should represent the civilization of the social ethics and help protect social orders, whereas JIU is also the carrier of Taoist carefree spirit and the Zen spirit of forgeting the Thing. The differentiation of the semantic expressions thus appears.
