How is it that Hamlet hesitates to revenge his murdered father? The most controversial topic—there ever was, and there ever will be. In this thesis, I, according to my own interpretations, make the analyses of the possible factors that prevent him from taking action to kill his bitterest foe.The thesis consists of Introduction, Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three and Conclusion. In Introduction, I, first of all, make a brief mention of the content of this play. Then I review the major visions on Hamlet's delay by those world renowned critics ranging from the neoclassic period to modern times. From Chapter One to Chapter Three, I, from three different perspectives, make the analyses of the possible causes that make Hamlet hesitate. In Chapter One, in my sense, it is his filial love for Gertrude and his pure love for Ophelia that make him stand in pause rather than take action to revenge his dead father. In Chapter Two, as I take it, his fervent desire for kingship makes him sink into an endless procrastination. In Chapter Three, to my mind, his hesitation in revenge is fated to him, because he is a humanist. In Conclusion, I point out that a heap of possible factors make Hamlet a complicated person, which goes beyond any simple explanation, thus blessing this play with an everlasting charm.
