On The Philosophical Interpretation Of The Analects Of Confucius From The Perspective Of Dialogism

According to Bakhtin's dialogism, the dialogue is a link between cultures both at home and abroad. Guided by Bakhtin's dialogism and Appiah's thick translation, this thesis makes a tentative study on the philosophical interpretation of The Analects of Confucius (herein after The Analects for short) and the translation of culture-specific terms in it.Firstly, the author believes translation could be arguably viewed as a great dialogue between the source culture and the target culture. In this dialogue, two voices, instead of one, or even heteroglossia should be heard. From microscopic view, translation could be regarded as the dialogue among the original author, the translator and target readers. Secondly, two American translators, namely, Roger Ames and Rosemont Henry, are briefly introduced. With great respect to the unique Chinese context and culture, these two translators interpret The Analects from perspectives of history, linguistics and philosophy. Finally, the author makes a case study on the philosophical terms of The Analects so as to give a more substantial presentation of the research results.The introduction briefly introduces the research background and the structure of this thesis.Chapter one gives introduction to the influence and studies of The Analects both at home and abroad.Chapter two mainly presents Bakhtin's dialogic theory. The cream of the dialogic theory is that all else is the means and dialogue is the end. A single voice ends nothing and resolves nothing. Two voices are the minimum for life, the minimum for existence. Translation in a sense could be regarded as a dialogue between the source culture and the target culture concerned on a macroscopic plane; It could also be viewed as dialogues among the original author, the translator and the target readers on a microscopic plane. The author holds that the translation of The Analects may promote the dialogue between Chinese culture and Western culture.Chapter three makes an introduction to two translators named Roger Ames and Rosemont Henry, They analyze The Analects from perspectives of history, philosophy, linguistics, and adopt the strategy of thick translation to remind target readers of the cultural otherness.Chapter four sorts out The Analects as expressive text types, and discusses how to render the culture-specific terms in The Analects such as"天","礼","仁"and so on.The last part of this thesis is the conclusion.
