The main body of the thesis is characters' civil lives in Mauriac's novels. Through families and people living in families, this thesis tries to analyze and discuss those sins in family life and express the relation of apocalypse and expiate in Christianity, which is the author's writing intention. The thesis focuses on: the bourgeoisie family model and the family contradiction, the soul burden of male and female in civil life, the sins from indulging in money, futility, escape. Mauriac's religion ideas and significance: God's apocalypse and Grace. The thesis is divided to four parts. Firstly, from the specific circumstanceof this mortal life——the middle class family, through typical characters'analysis, it explains the suffering of family and elucidates the truth that family problems rose because people are lack of love and comprehension, and then focuses on family contradiction under the control of money and emotions. Secondly, based on characters in works, it further explains how "a love desert " affects men and women who form different solitary experience and family wound. This kind of effect has brought irretrievable change for people's fates. Some women are in search of comfort through children in family. Some women seek the circumstance change out of family. They may have soul-searching process, but from the beginning to the end, they never really extend their lives. Their revolt and independence is not in the integrity. The most important thing is that they are lack of a kind of positive attitude and action on their own. The men's heart burden also need draught of affections and education. Then I continue to analyze people how to response to the sins. Keeping aloof and hypocrisy can't fundamentally solve the problems. Sins inevitably happened, some are apparent crime, some are hurts on thought and spirit. At last, from the author's viewpoint, through the character's choices of pilgrimage road after pains and sins, it reveals human nature and makes it become reality: God pours love into people's heart, then the salvation will do.
