The thesis focuses on the transitional function of Nabis in the history of art. Beginning with an extensive overview of Nabis, the thesis analyzes Bonnard and Vuillard, the two most brilliant Nabis artists, as well as their artistic works. Furthermore, a comprehensive exploration is made into the double roles that Nabis artists play, the inheritance of the former painters and the their influence on the followers. In the thesis the Nabis' historical significance is confirmed, meanwhile, the author expresses his expectations on Chinese painting.The whole thesis consists of five parts: the first part is an introduction to the Nabis, it describes the appearance of the Nabis; the second part is a detailed analysis of the most represertative Nabis' artists-Bonnard and vuillard; the third part is a investigates the Nabis' inheritance of Impressionism and their influence on modern arts; the fourth part is a close examination of the three aesthetic features in Nabis' works; and the last part, the conclusion, points out the problems in the present Chinese paintings with good expectations.
