Eugene O'Neill, the father of American drama, had won The Pulitzer Prize for drama four times and The Nobel Prize of literature. It is O'Neill who made American drama enter I he ranks of the world and contributed to the modern drama.Being an Irish descendant, O'Neill was greatly influenced by the Irish culture tradition upon his personality and works, although he was an indigenous American. The thesis explores Irish complex in his works from the aspect of "O'Neill and Ireland", so we can have a comprehensive understanding of him and his works.Irish is the unique existing Celtic who is European ancient nation. O'Neill who was proud of his Irish bloodline had a profound comprehension on the Irish history, admired the wit and braveness of Celtic, knew the melancholy and optimism of Irish very well. But his Irish bloodline resulted in discrimination from the snobbish New England; in addition to his father was a despised player. So O'Neill never found a true "home". He also had a profound comprehension on American reality. He considered it as an enormous failure under the flourish of the substance, because America lost its soul and gave up its religion in pursuit of the substance. All these urged him to turning to Irish culture for spiritual extrication.The culture conflict between Ireland and America developed his complex of Irish that permeated in the works through his lifetime, especially his late plays.The complex of Irish mainly embodied a large number of Irish prototype characters that in the content. The works truly reflect the life and thought, the perplexity and pursuit, the plentiful inner world about Irish-American. Irish Catholic was the spiritual support of Irish and the indispensable part in their life, especially during the centuries of domination. Therefore O'Neill represented the inner conflict about Catholic and the effect after losing belief besides uncovering the outside conflict between the two cultures. The inner world of Characters that was portrayed with blood and tear was the extension of his spirit pursuitand the cvolvement of his inner conflict.The complex oflrish mostly embodied the use of the Irish brogue, which is full of lilt, rhythm, cadence and sensibility in the form. Language was not a simple medium, because his unconsciousness had an effect on his wording and phrasing unavoidably. It was the complex of Irish that made him make use of the Irish brogue consciously. It is the brogue in O'Neill's dramas that makes us realize his underlying desire. He hoped that there was a culture model, which helped the Irish descendant look for true "home"; therefore, dramas are full of the meaning of culture and history.The flavor oflrish reverberates with the old Irish legend in the O'Neill's dramas. The dramas also incarnate the understanding and tolerance between men, and the confession and remission of sins. All these reflect the attempt of conformity. He wished he had searched the belonging for his family and Human.
