The development of Chinese literature and its literary trends has been in close contact with classical writers abroad since the 20th century, among whom Virginia Woolf is representative. This thesis, employing the cultural research point of view and the theory of comparative literature, tries to put in order and interpret how Woolf s poetics influence Chinese literature in four parts. Part I, as an introduction to the whole thesis, combs both domestic and abroad studies on Woolf, particularly summing up the reception of Woolf in China and commenting the translation and research of Woolf done by Chinese scholars. Part II probes Woolf s main poetics from her theory on stream of consciousness novels and from her theory on feminist literary criticism. Part III analyses how Woolf s theory of stream of consciousness novels exerts influence on Chinese modern literature, based on the comments and translations on Woolf s works in the 1920s and the 1930s. Part IV especially studies how Woolf s feminist poetics influence Chinese literature after the 1980s, according to the characteristics of introduction and translation on Woolf s works in this period, in order to penetrate the internal relationship between Woolf and Chinese feminist literature.
