Objective: To analyze the current situation of culture of focus, identification and drug resistance of mycobacterium in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and to provide information for diagnosis , treatment on tuberculosis of bone and joint. Methods: The culture of mycobacterium tuberculosis, identification and susceptibility tests were done by BACTEC MGIT 960 cultural and drug susceptibility testing system. Results: Sixty nine patients with tuberculosis of bone and joint involved in the study. Among them, 40 were culture positive, the cultural positive rate was 57.97%. Twenty four specimens were identified as mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, 10 as mycobacterium bovis and 6 as nontuberculosis mycobacterium(NTM). Forty specimens were done in susceptibility tests, and there were 15 cases resistant to at least one drug of streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin and ethambutol, 11 to streptomycin(27.50%), 11 to isoniazid(27.50%), 4 to rifampin(10.00%), 6 to ethambutol(15.00%). The total rate of drug resistance was 37.5%. Five cases were drug resistant among 24 mycobacterium tuberculosis(20.83%), and 4 cases were drug resistant among 10 mycobacterium bovis(40.00%), and 6 cases were drug resistant among 6 nontuberculosis mycobacterium(100.00%). Conclusions: The total rate of drug resistance is higher than the mean level on tuberculosis of bone and joint in Xinjiang. The most cases of tuberculosis of bone and joint are infected with mycobacterium tuberculosis, but the proportion of mycobacterium bovis and nontuberculosis mycobacterium is higher than the mean level. We can get a higher cultural positive rate by prolonging the cultural time. The surprisingly high rates of infection and drug resistance to NTM call for attention.
