Objective: To examines the expression of LOXL4 mRNA in the normal bladder tissue and urothelial cell carcinoma of bladder (UCCB) tissue, and to investigate its role in the occurrence, development of UCCB and its clinical significance. Methods:The expression of LOXL4 mRNA was detected by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 58 cases of UCCB and 12 cases of normal bladder epithelium. Results:The expression rate of LXOL4 mRNA in UCCB and normal bladder epithelium were 24.1% (14/58) and 100.0% (12/12), respectively. The expression level of LOXL4 mRNA in UCCB was significantly lower than that in normal bladder urothelial tissues (P<0.005). The expression rate of LOXL4 mRNA in UCCB was negatively correlated with clinical stag, tumor grade and tumor recurrence (P<0.05).Conclusions: 1. The LOXL4 mRNA expresses completely in 12 cases of the normal bladder tissue, but obviously decrease or loss in UCCB tissue. It is suggested that LOXL4 gene possibly suppress occurrence and progression of the tumor.2. The expression of LOXL4 in UCCB is related negatively with pathological grade, clinical stage and tumor recurrence of UCCB obviously. LOXL4 possibly becomes a new marker for diagnosis and prognosis of UCCB.3. Low expression or loss of LOXL4 is closely related the tumor development, its deactivation may play an important role in occurrence, progress and recurrence of bladder tumor. Examination of LOXL4 mRNA maybe judges the condition and the prognosis of the patient with UCCB.
