Objective To investigate anxiety, depression and psychological needs of the patients' family members and the related factors in intensive care unit (ICU). It would provide the foundation of interventions, and improve the level of mental health of ICU patients' family members,and then give a better support to the patients.Methods The study sample are 120 ICU patients'family members between December in 2008 and June in 2009. Anxiety, depression and psychological needs were assessed with CES-D, SAS, CCFNI respectively. The general condition of the patients'family member were collected with questionnaires designed by author.Results①The mean depression scores of ICU patients'family members was 19.65±9.44, it was significantly higher than the normal samples(11.52) and exceeded the cut-off of 16 for clinic depression.63.1% of family member reported CES-D scores which exceed the cut-off. Spouse of patient who received lower education,without social medical security and farmer reported higher incidence rate of depression compared with their counterparts.②The mean anxiety scores of ICU patients'family members on SAS was 48.11±9.31. Their level of anxiety was significantly higher than normal (29.78±10.07). The high anxiety index was significantly associated with the same effect factor like depression, among all the factors, relation between patients and family members is the main one.③The scores of five dimensionality of CCFNI from higher to lower is support acquisition, access to patients, information acquisition, assurance of patient's condition, self comfortable. Family members aged above 56 years-old reported lower lever of support scores. Family member who received education less than 9 years have higher support scores than others. Officials, intelligentsias in access to patients aspect have higher scores. Family members who were without social medical security get lower scores in self comfortable and access to patients. All the date above have statistical significance.④Compared with non-depression group, depression group have lower scores in self comfortable and support acquisition, higher scores in information acquisition, access to patients and assurance of patient's condition. The date have statistical significance; The correlation analyze between depression and CCFNI showed: self comfortable correlated negatively with depression, correlated positively with access to patients, information acquisition, assurance of patient's condition.Conclusion A high level of depression and anxiety existed in ICU patients'family members. Except the disease of patients, the depression and anxiety were influenced by social factors. Spouses of patients, above 30 years old, without social medical security, received lower education, farmers are the specific groups at high risk for depression and anxiety. Doctors and nurses should treat the patient and their family members as a whole body. when given treatment to patients, the psychological of family members should be concerned. we should provide direction interventions to improve the level of mental health in family member, and then they can improve the level of support for patients.
