Objective: Aim of this study was to assess the importance of the initial diagnosis and treament through analyzing the causes of acute limb ischemia(ALI).Methods: Department of vascular surgery in Union Hospital of Wuhan records of patients that were dignosed of ALI between May,2000 and April,2008,were classified to A and B type(A :the patients'arterial wall were integrity.B: the patients'arterial wall were incomplete).Analysed the etiology and treatment outcome of ALI .Results:In type A: in 220 cases, the ischemia was attributed to embolism;in 5 to the external compression of the artery and in the 15 to vasospasm. In type B: 25 were of dventitial rupture,5 were of aortic dissection and 32 were related to iatrogenic.A total of 237 patients were treated by Fogarty catheters, were account for 78.48%.42 patients had amputations. The amputation rate was 13.91% and urgent amputations were occurred in 10 patients.12 patients died during treatment in hospital ,in 6 cases were attibuted to cardiac,in 2 to renal failure and MODS and in the remaining 4 cases the causes of death were unclear.Conclusion:1. Embolism and thrombosis were most common etiology of ALI.but the other causes of acute limb ischemia must be emphasized during the the diagnosis and treatment of acute limb ischemia.the destination was to lower the misdiagnosis.2.The cases that were attibuted to iatrogenic were in increasing trend .In order to avoid medical tangle this cause of acute limb ischemia was concerned. 3:The ALI was credibly associated with higher amputation rate and mortality. So the diagnosis and treatment of acute limb ischemia timely was important.
