Objective To iscussing about the significance of treatment of positive Stenotrophomonas maltophilia culture in sputum specimens. Methods All patients who presented with positive SMA culture in sputum specimens between January in 2005 and June in 2010 in ICU of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Patients'demographics, underlying diseases, APACHEII score, SOFA score, prior duration of mechanical ventilation, prior length of ICU stay, prior antibiotic broad-spectrum exposure and total duration/length of mechanical ventilation/ICU were collected. And then according to the treatment, the patients were divided into two groups. The data collected from the two groups was compared by statistical methods. Results The total duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay and mortality of the treatment group is 27.04±21.59d,31.04±21.13d,31.03%。; The total duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay and mortality of the untreatment group is 32.85±23.07d,38.41±24.12d,22.86%. The two group has no statistically significant (P>0.05).Conclusions The treatment of positive Stenotrophomonas maltophilia culture in sputum specimens in ICU does not appear to affect outcome.
