| OBJECTIVETo examine betaine levels from dietary intake in pre-marriage young couples and its influenceing factors in Tongdao county.METHODSThis study was carried out in Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Tongdao county, Hunan Province from November 2009 to January 2010.This was a cross study by facilitating the cluster sampling method. 700 young people who were taking pre-marriage medical examination and planed to have a baby soon(within 6 months) were recruited in the study. Data were colllected by Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile(HPLP-Ⅱ), Perceived Health Status Scale, Food-frequency Questionnaire(FFQ) and demography data. Venous blood samples were taken from each subject for measurements of total cholesterol(TC), High density lipoprotein(HDL) ,Triglyceride(TG), Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL), and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT). SPSS13.0 was used for all statistical analysis, the statistical methods included statistical description, t-test, one-way ANOVA,pearson inter-correlation,and multiple linear regression analysis.RESULTS1 A total of 648 subjects (324 young couples) were included in the final analysis.2 Betaine levels from dietary intake Daily betaine intake was 109±76mg/d in women and 111±82mg/d in men.3 The research results showed that the subjects total score of HPLP-II was 124.17±21.70, the dimension of interpersonal relations scored the highest was 24.36±4.01,the dimension of nutrition and health responsibility scored the lowest was 18.86±5.51 and 15.2±5.00 respectively. 4 Total score of self-efficacy of health behaviour was 74.08±15.86,Among the four subscales,the exercise scored highest 22.95±4.92, followed by psychological wellbeing and nutrition 18.13±5.04 and 16.94±3.19 respectively, the health responsibility dimension scored lowest 15.78±3.91.5 Mean of TG, TC, HDL, LDL, and ALT in women was 0.81±0.52 mmol/L,3.96±1.20 mmol/L,1.32±0.50mmol/L, 2.51±0.52 mmol/L,14±12u/L respectively;and TG 1.13±0.99 mmol/L,TC4.02±1.20 mmol/L,HDL 1.27±0.69 mmol/L,LDL 3.18±0.92 mmol/L,ALT 18±13u/L in men.6 There were significant differences in the betaine levels from dietary intake among subjects with education, economic income, occupation and ethnic groups(P<0.05).7 The study found that there was negative association between betaine level and TG, TC, LDL, and ALT level(r=﹣0.201-﹣0.330,P<0.01), there was positive association between betaine level and HDL leve(lr=0.319,P<0.01). The dimension of nutrition and self-efficacy of nutrition have a significantly positive correlation with betaine level in pre-marriage young couples(r=0.538-0.556,P < 0.01).8 Education, economic income, self-efficacy of nutrition, the dimension of nutrition , were the four significant predictors of betiane level, accounting for 38.6% of the variance.CONCLUSIONS1 The betaine levels from dietary intake of young couples in this study are much lower than other populations.2 The influencing factor of betaine level from dietary intake were education, economic income, self-efficacy of nutrition, the dimension of nutrition.3 The correlation between betaine level and serum lipids. The total cholesterol(TC) and Triglyceride(TG),and LDL have negative correlation with betaine level, there was positive correlation with betaine levels and high density lipoprotein(HDL), These showed that betaine may be a protective factor for cardiovascular disease. |
