Objective:To discuss the prevalence, clinical features and risk factors for the severity of adenovirus infection with respiratory tract infection in hospitalized children in Chongqing. Methods:Collected 1271 nasopharyngeal aspirates in hospitalized children with respiratory tract infection at Respiratory Ward in CHCMU from June 2009 to February 2011. The DNA of ADV in the sample was detected using PCR technique. The positive amplification would be sequenced and the result was compared with the sequence in GeneBank deciding its serotype. Summarize the clinical data of ADV infection. The output was analyzed by SPSS17.0.Results:1. Adenovirus detection rate and type: Totally 1271 specimens, adenovirus was detected positive in 105 specimens with the positive detection rate 8.3%.The principal adenovirus serotypes were type 3(55 samples, 52.4%) and type7(40 samples,38.0%).2. Demography characteristics and Epidemic features of adenovirus infection:Of the 105 infections, there were 64 males and 41 females with the ratio of 1.6:1. The ages ranged from 1 to 134 months, 89(84.8%) occurred in children≤5 years of age, and 63 (60.0%) occurred in children≤2 years of age. The detection rate in summer and winter was higher. There was an epidemic peak of type 3 and type 7 in the winter ,2010.3. Clinical features:In the data, 36 samples (34.3%)were not only with ADV infection but also with other respiratory tract viruses. The most popular virus mixed was HBoV(17 samples). Adenovirus infection mainly caused lower respiratory infection with pneumonia in the first place. Most of the cases had fever, hyperpyrexia higher than 39.0℃was common. WBC count and LDH concentration were heightened usually.4. Risk factors for the severity of adenovirus infection:Of the 105 infections, 28 children(26.7%) had severe pneumonia , 17 males and 11 females. The ages ranged from 1 to 87 months with the median of 12 months. Type7 infection(P=0.022;OR=2.929;OR95%CI,1.168~7.344)or age≤2 years(P=0.009;OR=4.946;OR95%CI,1.499~16.235)increased the risk of severe disease after ADV infection.Conclusion:1. The positive rate of ADV infection with respiratory tract infection in hospitalized children in Chongqing was 8.3% , mainly type3 and type7,ADV infection mainly occourred in children≤5 years of age, epidemic seasons were summer and winter .2.WBC count and LDH concentration were heightened generally after adenovirus infection. The coinfection rate with other common respiratory virus was 34.3%,the most popular was HBoV.3. Type7 infection or age≤2 years were the risk factors for the severity of adenovirus infection.
