Objective Daily Interruption of Sedative Infusions (DIS) was proposed in 2000 by KRESS.Now it is the part of the management of ICU sedation. Its clinical application has been widely supported.Although the research on a DIS is very popular, but most of them focused on the clinical significance of the DIS and drug utilization.Few data are available on nurses'current practices in DIS and their attitudes toward DIS.Therefore,we developed a survey questionnaire to determine ICU nurses'current practices and perceptions of DIS.Methods A survey questionnaire was carried out in Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital affiliated to Medical College Of Zhejiang University. Each entry of the Questionnaire is proposed according to many domestic and international literature review.I referenced some similar questionnaires to design my questionnaire. The parent questionnaire was assessed by 8 professors in ICU. I pilot-tested the questionnaire by administering it to 20 individuals and analyzed it with SPSS 17.0 statistic software for its reliability. The questionnaire consisted of general information, the status of DIS,the knowledge about DIS.nurses'current opinions about DIS and the potential barriers to DIS application.Collected data was analyzed with SPSS 17.0 statistic software.Descriptive statistics analysis and correlation analysis were used. Results Questionnaire surrey indicated that: there is no formal training and operational processes in aspects of DIS in SRRSH ICU;Clinical nurses lack the knowledge about DIS;Clinical nurses acknowledge the significance of the DIS and is willing to implement. The main obstacles to Clinical implementation of the DIS was three areas:â‘ Nurses worry that the incidence of self-extubation, arteriovenous pipe or other device will increase during the DIS.â‘¡Nurses worry that the DIS can cause restlessness, increasing oxygen consumption, resulting in discomfort.â‘¢The absence of doctor during the DIS. Finally, most of the nurses expressed the hope to gain formal training and implementation process to help them implement the DIS.Conclusions The results suggest that the clinical execution of the DIS is low. That is not because the nurses do not accept the DIS.(not consistent with the findings from abroad). The main reasons are that nurses worried about patient's safety and comfort during DIS and they lack the knowledge of the DIS. The findings can help us to do quality improvement in future. There are still some limitations needed to be improved and explored.
