Objective:To study the theoretical basis and combination rules of prescriptions of treating the blood stasis syndrome of wasting-thirst with the method of activating blood and resolving stasis using documentation method.Method:86 prescriptions were selected from formula created by doctors in modern history who used the method of activating blood and resolving stasis to treat wasting-thirst, database was established with Microsoft Excel, TCM formula analyzing software co-developed by Chengdu University of TCM and Southwest Jiaotong University was input, relating data was processed by the statistic of Data Frequency. Results:In the formula applied in blood stasis syndrome of wasting-thirst, the application of drugs emphasized on tonifying and replenishing medicinal(23.3%), heat-clearing medicinal(17.8%) and blood-activating medicinal(15.1%). The using frequency of blood-activating and stasis-resolving drugs were, by order, dan shen, hong hua, chuan xiong, tao ren, chi shao, dan pi, niu xi, yu jin, ze Ian, yi mu cao, and shui zhi. The blood stasis syndrome of wasting-thirst could be subdivided into qi deficiency blood stasis syndrome, yin deficiency blood stasis syndrome, qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome, yang deficiency blood stasis syndrome, excessive heat and blood stasis syndrome, phlegm dampness blood stasis syndrome, qi and yin deficiency blood stasis syndrome, yin and yang deficiency blood stasis syndrome, and phlegm heat blood stasis syndrome. Conclusions:The etiology of the blood stasis syndrome of wasting-thirst was influent blood circulation and stasis of collaterals and meridians caused by qi, blood, yin and yang deficiency, qi stagnation, and generation of dampness and phlegm under the basis of both qi and yin deficiency and excessive heat. The main therapeutic method was activating blood and resolving stasis, and according to different combination syndromes, medicinal for replenishing qi, tonifying yin, promoting qi, warming yang, clearing heat or resolving phlegm and draining dampness should be added. Among the blood activating medicinal, blood-activating and menstruation-regulating medicinal were most frequently used, especially dan shen and hong hua.
